FRAGILE Cotswold countryside could be in line for better protection if a bid for £1,487,500 of National Lottery cash comes off.
Cotswold District Council has made the bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund on behalf of the Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Partnership. A final decision on it is expected by March 1 next year.
District councillors heard this week that Lottery representatives had responded positively to the idea behind the £3 million Caring for the Cotswolds project, which would see special measures taken to protect areas of unimproved limestone grassland in the Cotswolds, including setting up a special flock of rare breed sheep and a herd of rare breed cattle to help graze such areas.
It also includes a restoration project for dry stone walls in the AONB and projects to promote and record the area's landscape and distinctiveness.
