MY recent remarks about call centres sparked an angry letter from a reader, who objected to the reference to "dismal" Sunderland.

Stephen Hodgson, who hails from the north-east and now lives in Ronkswood, pointed out that Sunderland has re-invented itself and the riverside area is a showcase for its talent.

A stroll along the Wear will lead people to the Stadium of Light football ground, the St Peter's Riverside Sculpture Project, a Marine Activities Centre and the National Glass Centre.

Historians can visit Washington Old Hall and Hylton Castle, while those who enjoy the fresh air might like to know Sunderland even boasts a kite festival.

I'm tempted to move north-east myself.
