Small firm in line for major bank accolade RECOVERING critical mail from disaster-hit companies could see a Worcestershire firm named HSBC Small Business of the Year.

Critical Mail Continuity Services, based in Pershore, is one of just eight companies nationwide to reach the final of the bank's award scheme.

Less than two years after the firm was launched, it employs 17 staff and is expecting to record a turnover in excess of £2m.

Major blue chip companies including Powergen, One 2 One and NTL are already on its books.

Angus Stormonth Darling, who set up CMCS with Paul Bennett in March 1998, said the firm could ensure critical documents such as invoices, statements, insurance policies and contract notes were still delivered on time in times of mail failure.

"We've developed a tailored service to recover it using innovative software and machinery design," he said.

"In the event of a disaster, we can ensure continuity so that distribution of critical mail continues to run smoothly, maintaining vital customer relations as well as protecting business interests."

CMCS is up against a Somerset-based food manufacturer, distributors of a leak detection device, based in Barnsley, a Peterborough firm which provides computer training and access for blind and partially-sighted people and a Nottingham waste recycling service.

Newquay Zoo, Orkney Fishermen's Society and Riders for Health, a management company operating vehicles delivering healthcare in Africa, are also in line for awards.

"The awards were established in 1997 to recognise and reward small firms in the UK and the vital contribution they make to the economy," said John Rendall, head of business banking at HSBC.

"It's estimated they employ more than 12 million people and generate more than 50 per cent of the UK's business turnover.

"We're thrilled with the calibre of this year's entries and it's been tough narrowing it down to the final eight."

The awards, organised in conjunction with BBC for Business and the Small Business Bureau are to be announced this Thursday, November 16.
