A Mulberry three planted by the playwright George Bernard Shaw was among those brought down in the recent storms.

Now the tree could be replaced under a campaign being proposed by Malvern Theatre Players.

The tree, donated to Malvern by Shaw and planted in Priory Park in 1936, was one of four trees lost in the gales.

George Bernard Shaw is one of the great names from Malvern's past, the Malvern Festival being founded in his honour by Sir Barry Jackson in 1929.

The playwright died 50 years ago last week.

Malvern Theatre Players company manager, Chris Bassett, said the group would be interested in approaching Malvern Hills District Council for permission to plant a replacement.

"I think we would be very interested," he said, "We do try and safeguard some of the old history of the Theatre."

He added the group could try and get support from the Shaw Society for the project and perhaps invite a Shaw dignitary to carry out the planting.

Malvern Theatre Association chairman Mari Blackwell said in principle it was the sort of project the committee would consider supporting.
