DEFENDING champion Ali Carter today begins his attempt to become the first player to retain the Benson and Hedges Snooker title.
Carter's is one of eight matches scheduled to start this morning when he faces Munraj Pal for a place in the last 32.
Opening matches for Alain Robidoux, Nigel Bond and Dean Reynolds should also add spice to the occasion later today at the Willie Thorne Club in Malvern at a tournament where the winner is guaranteed a place at the B & H Masters at Wembley in February.
James Wattana is another to look out for tomorrow (2.30), while Jimmy White's appearance on Saturday afternoon is expected to see the venue packed out.
Play starts daily at 10am with three sessions until Sunday, while the last 32 will begin the battle for the splendid gold trophy and £5,000 the next afternoon.
There will also be two sessions on Tuesday, including quarter-final action from 6pm when Wednes-day's semi-finalists will be determined.
Next Thursday's final starts at 2pm with the last ten, of the 17-frame final, getting under way at 7.30pm.
Admission is free and seat tickets may be reserved in advance by calling the club on 01684 892147.
