THANK you for airing the views of consultant Mr Hywel Williams regarding the reorganisation of the Health Service in the area (Evening News, November 3).

I speak from experience in saying that Mr Williams was a hard-working and dedicated consultant who put the needs of his patients above all else.

He and the overworked staff at The Worcester Royal Infirmary saved my life when I was very ill. He is very critical of the way the Trust has handled the whole of the reorganisation.

On the other hand, we have Mr Harold Musgrove of the NHS Trust saying everything is all right and that Mr William's information is out of date. I remember when Mr Musgrove was Chairman of Austin Rover Group.

At the time I unfortunately purchased a car from Austin Rover and it was always going wrong despite their adverts at the time promising me superb performance and reliability. Just the same promises Mr Musgrove is making now.

I know who I believe. It is about time the people in Worcester joined those in Kidderminster who are trying to tell the men in sharp suits that a quart will not go into a pint pot.

The building of the new, smaller, hospital using the Private Finance Initiative is a costly mistake that later generations will pay for.

The reason given for the smaller hospital is usually said to be because people are staying for shorter periods. If that is so, why are there not already spare beds in our local hospitals?

It is a mess and like BSE, Railway Privatisation, The Dome and so on. The people who devise these schemes walk away from the problems take their big pay packets and then move on to another lucrative post.

T A JAMES,

Pershore.
