THE landlord of a Wolverley pub is hoping residents in the village can sleep easier thanks to a new initiative to tackle crime in the area.

Nigel Addison, who moved to the Queens Head in May, has successfully pressed for the introduction of an eight-camera CCTV system, which is now in place around the premises.

And his call for the increased security was backed up by events in the village in June when Wolverley Postmaster Richard Watkins was the victim of an armed robbery, and a torched car and used syringes were found on the pub's car park.

Wolverhampton and Dudley Breweries, which owns the pub, originally pledged to Mr Addison that funding would be available for the scheme in spring next year, but agreed to speed up the programme following the post office robbery.

As part of the scheme, new lighting has also been installed on the car park. Infra red cameras are recording 24 hours a day and Mr Addison has assured police he will make all tapes available to them in a bid to stamp out anti-social behaviour.

He said: "I first became aware of the problem when I did a relief spell at the pub in January.

"Once I was full-time manager, myself, residents and the local Neighbourhood Watch group decided to ask the brewery for help and I am delighted they have been able to install the new security so quickly."
