FLOOD problems looked set to continue blighting Worcester City Centre today as the River Severn levels showed no sign of falling.

The waters reached a high point at midnight and this morning Worcester Bridge remained closed.

"It will probably be closed throughout this afternoon and tomorrow morning," said Andy Walford, the city council's principal engineer.

He added that trying to forecast when life would return to normal was like asking "how long is a piece of string".

The water levels remain high because of high tides downstream in Gloucester.

Hereford and Worcester Fire Brigade spokesman Alec Mackie said a team of firefighters spent last night at the Kays depot in Bransford Road, St John's.

"We stationed a crew there to make sure that we had cover over the west side of the city," he said.

"If the bridge is closed again tonight we'll probably send firefighters there again."

In Bewdley, the river also peaked last night, but remained more than 15ft above normal level this morning.

The town's Baptist Church, in High Street, has been converted into an information centre and can be called on 01299 403267.
