TOWNSFOLK can shine a light for a loved one this Christmas as part of a new charity venture.

Victoria Square will be home to the Tree of Light this year.

Residents are being invited to sponsor lights on the cedar tree in memory of a relative or friend.

Droitwich Spa Saltway Rotary Club and St Richard's Hospice, in Worcester, have joined forces to organise the Yuletide scheme.

Thousands of lights have been donated and all cash raised will go to the hospice and local charities, which have not yet been chosen.

Organisers hope to open a book of memories for a display at a prominent Spa venue.

Rotarian Stuart Beardsall, of Westwood Avenue, said: "This is our first venture of this kind and we hope the town will get into the festive spirit and support us.

"Hopefully, we can help the less fortunate and remember our loved ones."

Sponsorship forms are available from the Advertiser's High Street office and Lloyds TSB Bank, in Victoria Square, which is handling the account for donations.

The grand switch on will be at 6pm on Monday November 27.
