AN inquest into the death of a Worcester teenager who was killed in a head-on smash has been opened and adjourned.

Phillip Allen, of Isaac Walk, St John's, died on Sunday night when his silver Citroen AX was in collision with a Ford Fiesta on the A38.

The former Christopher Whitehead pupil's car split in two on impact - the front and back ends landing 60ft apart on the road in Martin Hussingtree.

The female driver of the Fiesta suffered a broken wrist and chest injuries and had to be cut from her vehicle.

The devastated teenager's family did not want to talk about their son, but news of his death saddened the community near his Worcester home off the Bransford Road.

"It is one of those terribly sad things," said shop assistant Sandra Dyer from the nearby Bransford Road stores.

Another neighbour Dave Wilson said he was "shocked" to hear of the 18-year-old's death.

"I was actually away at the weekend but I am very sorry to hear of his death," he said.

"The family are a quiet family and keep themselves to themselves."

An inquest was opened in Stourbridge on Monday by Worcestershire Coroner Victor Round.

Mr Round said Mr Allen's cause of death was multiple injuries. The inquest was adjourned to a date to be fixed.
