THE wet weekend failed to stop thousands of revellers from enjoying firework spectacles across the county as displays lit up the Worcestershire skies.

More than 2,500 people braved the elements to watch Worcester Rugby Club's 40-minute display in which £4,000 of fireworks were released at Sixways

"It was a brilliant display," said spokeswoman Nicky Goodwin.

"Even with the weather and radio announcements that it had been cancelled, we still had a great turnout from people braving the weather, although people were stood under cover.

"Many people stayed on to watch the live band in the marquee so the event went on to about 10.30pm. But the fairground we had was closed due to the weather which was a bit disappointing.

"This was the first event of this size held at the ground but I am confident it will be an annual event now."

On Friday, £3,000 worth of fireworks were released at Worcester City Football Club as 2,000 people watched the club's display, which was released to music from the movies.

Laurie Brown, vice chairman of the football club, said the 30-minute display was the best ever held by the club.

"It was a superb display and many people said what a great show it was. It was thanks to all the effort put in by others. Without them it would not have happened."
