A DRIVER has been killed in an horrific smash after his car spun out of control on a bend, collided with another vehicle and split in two.

The front and back ends of the man's silver Citroen AX were 60ft apart after the head-on collision near Martin Hussingtree, near Droitwich, last night.

The driver, believed to have been killed on impact, landed 20ft from the back of the crushed hatchback. The car's engine lay another 20ft away.

Insp Paul Gamble, of West Mercia Police, said the Citroen had overtaken a red Vauxhall Nova near the Sandyway bend on the A38 at around 8.45pm.

The driver, who has not been named, swerved on to the wrong side of the road and collided head-on with a red Ford Fiesta.

The female driver, who suffered a broken wrist and chest injuries, had to be cut free. She was still being treated at Redditch's Alexandra Hospital today.

The Nova driver and his passenger escaped unhurt.

Sub fire officer Julian Jenkins, of Worcester Fire Station's Green Watch, said the Citroen looked to be a "ringer" - where the front of one vehicle and the back of another are welded together to make one car.

"It was confusing when we first arrived - the front and back ends were so far apart we thought three vehicles were involved," he said.

"The Citroen looked like it had been spot-welded together - and not very well - about every two inches.

"It was torn in two and the two ends ended up 60ft apart. The poor lad had no chance at all. It fell apart as soon as it touched something."

Worcester police were unable to confirm the Citroen had been built from two separate vehicles.

Witnesses are urged to contact PC Vaughan Innes on 01905 723888.
