THE River Severn at Bewdley has peaked but is still expected to stay at a high level for some time, according to Kidderminster police.

There have been around 110 evacuations in the affected area within the Kidderminster division.

A number of residents have used the "rest centre" located at Stourport Community Centre in Lickhill Road, Stourport.

Other people have chosen to stay with family and friends.

An information centre has been set up in The Baptist Church, High Street, Bewdley, for residents to use. It can be contacted on 01299 403267.

A number of roads in Bewdley still remain closed but the A456 Bewdley bypass is open. Kidderminster police are urging people only to use it for essential journeys.

The emergency services, district and county councils and the Environment Agency will be on both sides of the river at Bewdley dealing with any emergencies.

People are also being asked not to call the police to check on weather reports.

Parents should keep their children away from the river as even calm waters can have strong undercurrents and hidden dangers such as debris or missing manhole covers.

People needing help and advice should call the county's helpline number on 01905 767677 or the Environment Agency Flood Helpline on 0845 9881188.
