THE worst floods in 50 years were not enough to disrupt the local Meals on Wheels service for elderly and housebound people in Upton-upon-Severn.

Women's Royal Voluntary Service Meals on Wheels organiser for the area, Annie Surman, received extra help from her farmer husband Peter, who offered the services of his tractor to help deliver meals to outlying areas.

"It's wonderful that Peter was able to do this for us," said WRVS food services manager for Worcestershire Jayne Stock.

"It is particularly important during the current crisis that our meals recipients know someone will still be visiting them to deliver their hot meal.

"Without Peter's help it would have been extremely difficult to get through to people because of the floods.

"We are really proud of all our volunteers who put others before themselves and continue to ensure that meals are delivered as normal."

Mrs Stock said WRVS Meals on Wheels volunteers delivered more than a meal.

"They also bring vital contact to people in their own homes," she said. "For some recipients the person delivering their meal may be the only social contact they have all day.

"By delivering a meal to someone who perhaps can't shop or cook, volunteers help them to keep their independence."
