MALVERN Chess Club's third team started off the new season with a hard fought win at home against Kidderminster Rooks.

This was the first game at Malvern's new venue at Davenham House in Graham Road. The final score was 2 - 1 , Malvern having black on the odd boards. The individual results are as follows (Malvern names first):- Maurice Ginger , Bill Pugh ; Denis Spencer , Paul Thomas ; Phil Millard , Ken Durnell ; Panu Sugkrarock 1, Terry Pountney 0.

On board 4 was a queen's pawn game, which proceeded fairly evenly until move 30 when Terry tried to exchange off a rook but overlooked that it allowed his knight to be trapped on the edge of the board. Panu soon captured it and Terry eventually resigned

Board 3 was probably the most exciting. The Opening was a Queen's Gambit Accepted and went along fairly evenly a first with Ken having a pawn majority on the king's side and Phil a pawn majority on the queen's side. Phil's attack with his pawns looked strongest and would probably have won but he offered a draw knowing that this was all that Malvern needed.
