AT the recent AGM of the Worcestershire Golf Club Ladies Section outgoing Captain Esme Davy chaired a well attended meeting.

She thanked all the ladies for their support and patience making her year in office extremely enjoyable. The new committee was elected with June Jones as Lady Captain, Jill Exell as her Vice-captain, Linda Mackie as Secretary, Helen Landau as Competition Secretary, Kate Cross as Handicap Secretary, Anne Goode as Treasurer and a committee of Jane Tromans, Jill Mico, Zena Lloyd and Norma Pottinger.

Flowers were sent to outgoing Captain Esme Davy by Club Captain Garnett Scott and the Ladies Section and to the incoming Captain by Club Vice-captain Terry Price and June's family.

June started playing golf as a child, coming from keen golfing parents. She played lacrosse and squash before joining the Worcestershire GC in 1991. As she already had a good eye for the ball, her handicap soon came tumbling down, she now plays off 19. She has previous experience on the committee including acting as Competition Secretary. Her husband Gordon is a member of the WGC and the have three grown up children.

Following the AGM past Captain Esme presented the trophies for her year. Of note was the cup for the most improved golfer of the year, which went to teenager and schoolgirl from the Chase, Joanna York who reduced her handicap from 34 to 24.

Club champion Cath Francis produced another great performance to win the Winners Cup the previous Sunday. Despite her ball finding the water on the 17th she played two under her handicap of 11.

The Lady Captain June Jones, in the absence of the honeymooning Club Captain Garnett Scott, welcomed 30 couples to the first Winter Mixed Competition played on a beautiful autumnal afternoon.

The results in the Greensome Competition were very close, the winners by a narrow margin were Laurie & Jane Long 39 points, 2 Gordon & June Jones 38, 3 Phil & Val Burton 37, 4 Ken & Sabrina Willett 37, 5 Graham & Evelyn Hill 36, 5 Terry Price & Norma Pottinger 36 and 7 Mark Read & Liz Evans 36.

The Lady Captain's Drive-in was held the week following the AGM in very good weather conditions, where June Jones hit two excellent drives, these were retrieved by Liz Evans and Mary Horrobin who with the rest of the ladies were waiting down the fairway.

This was followed by a three ball alliance won by Cathy Harris, Eileen Hunt & Audrey Emery with runners-up Lyn Bayley, Sally Agnew & Janet Clowrey.
