PUBLIC toilets at British Camp are being used for "covert homosexual activity" according to a report by Herefordshire Council.

It has also raised concerns about "covert activity" at toilets at the Wyche Cutting in a review of problems facing the county's loos.

The Council cleans the toilets on behalf of owners, Malvern Hills Conservators, but may abandon the arrangements as part of a cost cutting review.

Anti-social problems such as explicit graffiti, holes drilled through doors, used condoms left in cubicles and general vandalism issues have been highlighted in the report.

The Council will discuss the review at a meeting on Tuesday, which may lead to a number in Herefordshire being closed down.

Ian Rowat, director of the Conservators, said it was a very worrying situation.

"I wouldn't want to see these toilets close because a lot of walkers use them," he said.

"We don't want people being caught short on the hills and as we own the building we should be doing everything in our power to make better provision.

"I'm disappointed with the standard and maintenance we're producing for visitors and this week we've spent £2,500 at the British Camp toilets, painting and replacing locks and trying to put everything straight," he said.

As to the problem of anti-social activities in the toilets, Mr Rowat agreed it is not a good situation.

"I know they've got these problems but it's not an ideal world. I'm not an expert on these things but I know some toilets are listed on the Internet as venues. I have been to the toilets and seen the graffiti and I feel very bad about it, but it's a fact of life in today's society," he said.

"If Herefordshire Council are going to renege on the cleaning, we'll have to see what we can do. It's not a happy situation but it's one I've inherited.

"We're not experts on toilets. I'm a land manager and I didn't know I'd have to maintain toilets but I hope this meeting provokes a reaction and a solution will be found," said Mr Rowat.
