THE October meeting of the Longdon Churchwomen's Fellowship on October 24 was addressed by Mrs B Kings on the work of a Justice of the Peace.

Mrs B Kings gave us a very comprehensive and lively outline of the work of a magistrate and the scope of the Magistrates Courts. This ranged from the training magistrates received, even the style of dress that was advisable, how they were recruited, the number of magistrates comprising the South Worcestershire bench and where the courts are held to the place of the Magistrates Courts as the first level in our Criminal Law Courts, more serious cases being immediately committed to the Crown Court. Particularly interesting was the work of some of the specialist panels and Mrs Kings expanded o the role of the enforcement panel. We came away with a better understanding of the complexity of effective sentencing. It was altogether a ver interesting evening.
