WORCESTER was today bracing itself for more flooding as experts warned the nightmare was far from over.

Three inches of rain are expected in the county next week - meaning more run-off into the swollen River Severn.

Despite river levels in Bewdley beginning to drop today, and the floods in Worcester stabilising, the Environment Agency warned the water was still rising downstream in Upton-upon-Severn.

And it said there would be no let-up for the hundreds of homes and businesses across Worcestershire which have been underwater for five days.

"For the time being, the situation is getting better," said spokesman Emma Candler. "But there are storms coming on Sunday. We're not trying to spread panic, but people should be prepared."

Evening News weatherman Paul Damari said November's entire average rainfall would hit next week, accompanied by winds of up to 70mph.

"This spells trouble on top of the inch we had yesterday," he said. "It means instant run-off into the rivers because the ground's so waterlogged.

"Although river levels might be improving, we have to watch out for this prolonged, heavy rain."

At one stage, yesterday, New Bridge over the Severn on the southern bypass joined Worcester Bridge in being closed, meaning that only the crossing at Holt Fleet was open to traffic.

Garages across the county were also forced to ration petrol as drivers fought to top-up supplies for lengthy journeys home.

Fire brigade spokesman Alec Mackie said the brigade was bracing itself for the deluge.

One appliance had been deployed to St John's for emergencies. An inflatable boat has also been shipped to Stourport-on-Severn.

"We're poised to deal with any emergencies, whether they're man-made or God-made," said Mr Mackie. "We have no problems."

The brigade is in constant touch with the ambulance service and the police.

"The situation will be monitored," said a Worcester police spokesman. "We're on top of things. We're prepared."

The county council's emergency 01905 767677 Floodline will be manned until lunchtime tomorrow, when the situation will be reviewed.
