MOTHERS' UNION: Stow Mothers Union has a members' meeting tonight (Thursday) at 7.30pm at 4 Chestnut Close. Next Tuesday, there is Corporate Communion at St Edward's at 10am.

VOLUNTEERS WANTED: Due to the curtailment of the Ambulance Car Service, the North Cotswold Voluntary Help centre has a greatly increased number of requests for its transport service. More volunteer drivers are needed to ease the pressure on existing drivers and to take the place of those who have retired. If you can help, contact the centre on 01608-651115.

NAUNTON BONFIRE: On Saturday night, Naunton Bonfire Party takes place at the Recreation Field, Naunton. The bonfire will be lit at 7pm followed by firework display at 7.30pm. Refreshments. Proceeds to the Village Millennium Fund.

COFFEE MORNING: Also on Saturday, the Cats Protection League are organising a coffee morning at the Church Rooms between 10am and 12noon. Cakes, gifts and a raffle.

SERVICE OF THANKSGIVING: On Sunday, there will be a Service of Thanksgiving for the Departed at St Paul's Church, Broadwell, starting at 6pm. Preacher will be Dr Dilys Neill.

STOW GARDEN CLUB: Stow Gardening Club meet on Monday at 7.30pm in the Church Rooms when members will hear a talk by Mr T Jellymen on "Roses, planting and pruning". Competition is for a Halloween Potato.

GROWING PAINS: Another service in the series "Growing Pains" takes place on Monday evening at 7.30pm, this time in the village hall at Bledington. The evening starts with a simple meal and then Rev Simon Oberst will talk on "An effective Prayer Life". Places may be booked on 01451-830785.

TUESDAY WALK: "Edward Thomas was here" is the title of Tuesday's walk which starts at 10am from Adlestrop Village Hall car park. The walk goes to Little Compton for a pub lunch and returns via Chastleton and Adlestrop but no steep climbs involved. Distance, 8 miles and approx. 5 hours duration.

LIFT APPEAL PROGRESS: £300 was raised by a coffee morning held last week in aid of the appeal to install a lift in St Edward's Hall. Thanks to all who supported the event. Stow Civic Society have already donated £500 to the appeal fund which has also received a £200 gift from an anonymous charitable donor.

RED CROSS: The autumn sale held in St Edward's Hall last week raised £634 for Red Cross Funds. Part of the proceeds will go towards the cost of the holiday that is arranged each year for the handicapped in the North Cotswolds. Thanks to all who helped achieve this sum.

STOW SURGERY: Another event that took place last Saturday, when Stow was windswept and very wet, was the coffee morning for the Friends of Stow Surgery at which £342 was raised. The Friends Christmas card, by local artist Penny Cox, was on sale for the first time. Cards, cost 35p each or £1.80 for six, are now available from Penny Cox shop in The Square or at the Surgery.
