GARDENING CLUB: The October meeting (and AGM) was well attended, with more than 50 members, and were welcomed by chairman George Featonby. Presenting their financial report, he said that it had been a good year. After a huge deficit the previous year, we had reduced the deficit to a very small one and funds were still very healthy. Subscriptions for the current year would remain at £4. He went on to thank the members - Olive Hendrick, Marion Hill and Jean Glazebrook - for organising refreshments and raffles. Secretary, Jean Norcott, thanked members who had supported the very successful trips to Wisley and Birmingham Botanical Gardens - hopefully two more would be arranged for next summer. Club president, John Glazebrook, was persuaded to remain in office and the remaining officers and committee members were re-elected en bloc, with one vacancy due to a resignation. Competition awards for the year were announced. Frances Watson-Smyth was third, June Warner second, and Jean Norcott first. A successful plant sale raised almost £20 for the club funds and the evening was completed with John Glazebrook giving his very popular music and slides presentation, 'Round the Garden Year' a fitting end to an enjoyable evening.

MOTHERS UNION: Pershore's Mothers' Union met on October 24 and enjoyed getting back to their usual routine after a summer break which included a garden meeting and an outing. Plans were made for our part in the Faith Walk which has been organised for Mothers' Union members throughout Worcester Diocese, it is to be a daylong event based in St Andrew's Centre and involving the Baptist Church, Holy Redeemer and the Abbey. A list of helpers was drawn up for the MU stall at the Abbey mini-market on November 18. The speaker was Mrs Daphne Cook, her theme was marriage from the modern perspective. She described the careful preparation needed to help young couples make a success of their marriage. The sadness of the high divorce rate is of great concern. Couples living together in a settled relationship without marriage and same sex relationships are all part of the present way of life. The next meeting will be on November 28 when the speaker will be Mrs Elizabeth Kearney and her subject will be the recent MU Pilgrimage to North Ireland. Visitors are always welcome.
