KIDDERMINSTER Carolians are bidding to make up for two losing semi-finals in the early 1990s when they head along the road to Twickenham on Saturday in the NPI Cup.

They travel to Old Laurentians in the third round with their opponents one division higher in Midlands West Two and sitting in fifth place.

Larentians suffered their first defeat at the weekend when leaders Malvern defeated them 24-3 and KCs hope that Worcestershire will triumph again.

Coach Ross Baxter is familiar with the opposition from his Bromsgrove days.

Baxter remembers them as a team with great strength up-front but believes anything can happen in the cup.

KCs first team were without a match at the weekend, giving them an extra week to get injured players nearer fitness.

One of the keys to a possible win could be the availability of experienced hooker Mark James who may be the man to negate Laurentians' front-row power.

But KCs will have a good following and promise to fight to the end so the clash could be the turning point of a disappointing season.

The second team at full strength looked very good in winning an entertaining match despite dreadful conditions.

Assistant club coach Richard Ellis was in great form and this was matched with some good rugby from Giovanni Iacono, Duncan Carthew, Andy Halkon and Martin Bevan.

It was such a good display that the visitors ventured into the Kidderminster 22 just twice in the first 30 minutes.

KCs opened the scoring in the seventh minute when scrum-half Bevan set up a move from a penalty.

The ball reached Dave Betson on the left and he sprinted home with Tom Oakes converting and kicking a penalty to give his side a 10-0 lead at half-time.

Pershore came into the game early in the new half but Barry Turner left them standing when he received a ball 40 yards out on the left. Tom Oakes converted to make it 17-0.

A superb piece of rugby put them further ahead when Iacono delivered a good pass for Turner to score his second try which was converted.

Although they had been second best to Kidderminster, Pershore never gave in and deservedly scored a converted try.

However, KCs had the last word when Oakes, who had also played well, kicked his second penalty.

This last-ditch win was reward for some good teamwork throughout the game after Pershore dominated the first half, with KCs penned in for 40 minutes.

Only stubborn defence kept the score at 0-0 and Pershore took the lead in the second half with a converted try but Ian Doidge struck back with a penalty.

The same player scored the winning try as time ran out.

KCs' youngsters fought back brilliantly after going 12-0 down after 15 minutes.

Billy Chiverton touched down for a try, quickly followed by a converted score for James Guest to level by half-time.

Stuart Bromell and Laurence Round came on after the break and helped KCs dominated the rest of the match.

KCs added three more tries - by Guest, Bradley and Tim Lohoff plus a conversion by Bromell.
