THE GATEWAY to Evesham is to be spruced up.
Work is to start on the repair and re-painting of railings on both sides of Abbey Road in the next few weeks.
Evesham councillors have been calling for funds to be made available for the work for some time, even though the railings and land do not belong to Wychavon.
And at a community partnership committee meeting they convinced their council colleagues to vote for the work, which will cost £10,000.
Councillor John Smith said: "Rudge Estate owns the land, but although the owner has given the council permission to do the work, a request for a contributions towards costs was turned down.
"This area has been of great concern to the people of Evesham for many years and I look forward to its completion.
"The work will help improve the visual impact to our beautiful and much loved town."
Michael Palmer, for the Rudge Estate, said: "Mrs Evelyn Rudge has given the council permission to carry out the work, but declined to contribute to the cost. She paid for the trees several years ago to benefit the town which line Abbey Road."
