I WAS absolutely outraged to read the article in the Shuttle regarding the patient who had been sent to Worcester and then redirected to Wordsley.

While I feel extremely sorry for this gentleman, I feel it should be pointed out that nurses working in the minor injuries unit have to work within certain guidelines.

They are not allowed to refer patients to any specialties - such as ophthalmology, plastic surgery etc.

The emergency nurse practitioners are well aware that some patients need referral to specialist areas, but due to the restriction placed upon them, their hands are tied.

They have no choice but to work within the set protocols which means they can only refer to Worcester and Redditch hospitals.

A friend of mine works at our local hospital and I know that our nurses are doing their absolute best during a very difficult time.
