I HOPE Evesham people are not persuaded to buy the Regal Cinema. If there was money in it we would not be seeing this touching concern for our cinematic welfare. Buying would open a black hole, capable of swallowing public subscriptions for years to come. Forecasting is risky, but I think the outcome is predictable. A huge sum will buy it, an even larger sum will be spent restoring it, then of course it will run at a loss.
Eventually, some worthy committee will decide it is a white elephant and will vote to sell it for peanuts. At this point it will run into profit.
No, not because of good management, because Joe Public has soaked up all the losses.
Since the war we have drifted into a culture whereby every clapped out concern is off-loaded on to the public to resurrect at enormous expense, later they are almost given away. There are many examples, cars, rail, steel, to mention but a few. Buying the Regal is the same thing on a smaller scale.
If there is this huge demand for a cinema in Evesham, then someone will see a gap in the market, and fill it. The citizens of this area should have the good sense to let them take the risks, and use their own money. I intend to sit back, to wait, and see. In the meantime, if I do get my hands on £1000s, it will remain safely in my bank account.
