A DOG is a man's best friend. No more so than when he can pick up the telephone, retrieve fallen items, open and close doors and even support his disabled owner.

Robert Burns, from Walsall, a volunteer worker and lecturer for Dogs for the Disabled, told members of the Bromsgrove & Redditch branch about the history, ideals and progress of the group, which aims to give disabled clients support, self-confidence and independence.

It costs £5,000 to train, support and match each dog to a suitable client and all the money is raised by donation.

The meeting was also delighted to welcome Mrs Val Clarke, from SI Stourbridge, who is the Midland Arden regional president.

The business part of the meeting reported on president Judy Gill's luncheon on October 1, when 58 members and friends enjoyed a very successful and happy occasion.

The president's charity has presented a cheque to Dr John Burman for the continuing work of the Primrose Hospice.

A group of members will be attending the SI Conference in Cardiff.

The programme action work progresses well. The virtual baby doll is now in use at Arrow Vale School and the project to help the Mashambani zoo in Zimbabwe continues.

Support for the Limbs for Life charity continues by the printing and selling of Christmas cards.

Plans for more money-raising activities were discussed.

New member Victoria Schofield-Vollans was welcomed.

Member Linda Clement has been invited to join the Talking Newspaper team.
