THIS letter is directed at those honest and decent people that we still have in our society as a warning against those who follow a different path.

On the evening of October 18, between 7.30pm and 8pm my son's new Suzuki motor vehicle was broken into and vandalised on the Recreation Road car park next to the doctors' surgery. It had been parked there all day in a prominent position while he had been at work.

The vehicle was found with the alloy wheels missing although these had been fitted with lock nuts, and it was resting on the suspension and chassis on the tarmac. The passenger side door lock had been damaged to gain access, the car radio had been stolen and damage had also been done to the steering column and immobiliser. There was also severe damage to the bodywork.

The criminals were clearly not the brightest light bulbs in the box as they had left some items at the scene that were assumed to have been stolen from someone else. These had potentially more value than items stolen from my son's vehicle.

For my son and our family we will have to deal with the personal distress, inconvenience and eventual associated financial loss that this incident has caused.

I do not think any of us can identify a permanent solution to this type of problem except by continuing to be vigilant and taking as many precautions as possible to try and protect our property and ourselves.

In my opinion it is the lack of real deterrents imposed on criminals by our judicial system that continues to let us all down.
