THE men's and women's doubles champions were crowned at Wythall Tennis Club finals day.

Maureen Bridges and Hazel Buckle triumphed in the Pedvin finals, named after former president Ted Pedvin and his wife Jean.

And Pete Thomas and Duncan Pugh were crowned in the men's event.

Bridges and Buckle played Sue Lee and Gill Hancox after meeting in the preliminary round.

Bridges and Buckle dominated the early games not letting the opposition settle and took the first set 6-0.

The first game of the second set saw Bridge's serve broken with a Lee volley.

Lee and Hancox built a 4-1 lead with Hancox producing winning drives and Lee controlling the net.

A third set seemed inevitable before Lee's serve was broken and Buckle held serve through a couple of winning volleys from Bridges.

In a crucial game Hancox lost her serve and with it the confidence grew in Bridges and Buckle, whose backhand was an important factor as they won the next two games to take the set 6-4 and the match.

Pete Thomas and Duncan Pugh took on Ian Smith and Chris Maggs in the mens event.

Smith began the match with seven deuces before he was broken and Pugh won his serve with ease.

Maggs then lost his serve after pressure from Thomas at the net, and from 15-40 down Thomas held his serve to take a 4-0 lead.

The fifth game saw Smith hold his serve with decisive forehands from Maggs who had settled down, before games went with serve but the damage was done and the set ended 6-2 to Pugh and Thomas.

Smith and Thomas held serve to begin the second set but Maggs was broken by two excellent Pugh volleys before Duncan was broken with Maggs hitting the vital winner to level at 2-2.

Games went with serve as the score reached 3-3 but Maggs was broken despite forcing three deuces.

Pugh held his serve in style and Smith had to hold his serve to keep the match alive.

At 40-15 it seemed possible but Pugh, determined to win his first final, hit two forehand drives to take the score to deuce.

Thomas hit a topspin lob for match point and Pugh won the final with a volley after Smith made an interception and seemed to have saved the match.
