A CRACKDOWN on shoplifters in Droitwich Spa has proved to be a success thanks to a radio link between police and traders.
The town's retail crime initiative has cut the number of offences from 143 in 1997/98 to 69 in 1999/2000.
Officers have been working with traders and the Droitwich Spa Association for Retail, Tourism and Services (DARTS).
The scheme has included training for employees, better store design and tackling credit card fraud.
Shops are linked by radio and have access to closed circuit television cameras to catch and identify offenders.
Henry Brummel, of Henry Brummel Menswear, in Queen Street, said: "In the past we have had some problems with retail crime. The radio link provides added confidence if a situation occurs.
"I've had to use it and it's good to know you can contact police swiftly if they're needed."
Brenda Morris, of Beaubelle Gifts, in Salters' Shopping Centre, said when the radio was first fitted it helped catch many shoplifters.
"It hardly seems as though we use it any more -- so I think it has been a great help," she added.
Spa beat manager PC Alun Jones said: "Retail crime does not pose the problem it did before the launch. But that does not mean we will be complacent.
"We will continue to address the incidents positively."
