AN established trader is delighted at the number of independent businesses which are now in Droitwich High Street.

Colin Smith, of Hereford House, said it has been many years since so many shops have been open. Only two outlets are not in use.

The butcher, who has traded in the Spa for 26 years, said: "We now have a brilliant variety of shops and I'm delighted to see so many independent firms.

"We are attracting lots of visitors to our old town.

"People like the personal and friendly service we offer.

"I've always got the time to speak to customers about what they're buying and how to prepare it.

"It's great to see High Street looking busy and alive."

Annette Westray, of True or False Nail, Hair and Beauty Salon, in High Street, agreed.

She said: "We have got fantastic and interesting shops, yet I feel some people do not know they are here.

"I urge people to support their business community and come into High Street. It's well worth a visit."

Droitwich Spa Association for Retail, Tourism and Services (DARTS) vice-chairman Kevin O'Donnell said: "Initiatives organised in High Street and Gurneys Lane have contributed to a gradual increase in the number of customers visiting our businesses.

"But more needs to be done, preferably in partnership with the authorities and our members, to ensure the profile continues to rise."
