A REDDITCH woman who lost her fianc to CJD has vowed to keep campaigning to make sure the BSE crisis never happens again.

Marie Lawrence made her comments as the BSE inquiry came to a conclusion at the end of last week after more than three years.

Ms Lawrence, of Matchborough, lost fianc Mike Clifford in 1996 and is expected receive hundreds of thousands of pounds compensation in an announcement due to be made today.

But she said the long battle to find answers surrounding the cause of her fianc's death had never been about money.

She said: "We were all very pleased with the inquiry report and the outcome, it was all very overwhelming. It's all final now and I'm finding it hard to take in."

Ms Lawrence, who works as a nurse, has welcomed the announcement from agriculture minister Nick Brown that the Government is to plough £1 million into the CJD Surveillance Unit.

The unit gives effective treatment in early diagnosis and supports families of sufferers.

Ms Lawrence she said she was happy Mr Brown gave reassurances the ministers involved in the BSE scandal would be disciplined.

Mother-of-two Ms Lawrence said she felt deflated and emotional but said there was no way she would ever move from her Redditch home.

She said: "Mike died in this house, he is here with me and I talk to him every day. I have a lot of memories in this house which are far too valuable to leave."

She added: "The BSE inquiry may have finished but I will carry on campaigning to make sure it never happens again."
