REDDITCH Advertiser sub-editor Sarah Cowen clocked a personal best when she competed in the Great Northern Run, despite having to wear a green bin liner to brave the cold.

The energetic mother of four took on fierce winds and freezing temperatures to compete in the 13-mile run to raise £180 for Get Kids Going, a charity which provides sports wheelchairs.

Mrs Cowen, who ran with her husband, Rupert, was one of 40,000 competitors and completed the course in just two hours and 18 minutes.

She said: "It was a great day. I have only ever been able to complete 13 miles in two hours, 30 minutes.

"The hardest part was waiting for two hours to start, it was freezing and they gave us bin liners to keep us warm.

"But we did a Mexican wave which stretched for about two miles and we did warm-up exercises with television's Mr Motivator."

Redditch doctor Norman Dawes raised about £2,000 for the Bramble's Trust, which helps support children who have lost close relatives.

The Bridge Surgery doctor completed the run in just under two hours.
