PROPOSALS to locate Redditch Market in a permanent spot on Silver Street in the town centre will be put to traders within the next two weeks.

The move comes after the Redditch Advertiser revealed last week the new temporary location of the market, which is to be in Market Place.

The market will be moved for 18 months to allow department store giant Debenhams to be built in Royal Square.

Redditch Councillor David Cartwright, who chairs the policy and resources committee, said: "At the moment the proposals are very complicated because it involves the road going over the top of Royal Square, the land at the back of the library and the area by the old food hall. But the problem is that there are different levels."

Mr Cartwright said the council was looking at all sorts of different proposals and some were better than others from a technical point of view.

The new market will have the majority of stalls undercover with a number of small shop units or kiosks as part of the scheme.

It will keep the atmosphere of a traditional market with improved facilities for year-round shopping.

Mr Cartwright added: "No doubt the traders will have their own views when we present the proposals and then there will be a consultation process on the final proposal."
