DROITWICH Spa MP Peter Luff has warned that Droitwich's main post office could be in danger.

The Tory MP fears the counters in Ombersley Street East may shut as part of a national restructuring scheme.

He recently lost a battle to save Evesham's town centre post office and wants to begin a campaign to prevent a similar closure in Droitwich.

The Mid-Worcestershire MP says a leaflet issued by the Post Office featured a Government policy to transfer benefit payments from post offices to bank accounts.

The utility faces a loss of income of £400m per year.

The MP said the leaflet warns some counters may move into shops to reduce revenue loss.

Mr Luff added: "These statements add up to one thing - a huge danger hangs over the town's post office.

"It's time to begin a campaign to save the Droitwich office.

"It's well run, attractive and in a superb location."

Mr Luff plans to raise his concerns with councillors and traders.

A Post Office spokeswoman said: "We are committed to providing a main post office service in Droitwich and we have no plans to change the way we currently run the post office or its location."

Worcestershire county councillor Peter Pinfield (Lab, Droit.Town) said: "The post office provides a service which cannot be replicated.

"I'm sure if it was under threat, residents would shout out loud to protect it."
