DOG owners have been banned from exercising their pets during the peak season on the beach where a Rednal youngster died from a killer bug.

Between April 1 and September 1 the four-legged friends are not allowed on part of the stretch at Dawlish Warren, in Devon.

Around 14 months ago Heather Preen died after contracting the killer bug while on holiday at the resort.

At an inquest into her death South Devon coroner Hamish Turner recommended the moves in a bid to rid the beach of its dog litter problem.

Last month, when Heather would have celebrated her tenth birthday, Teignbridge Council agreed to create the dog-free zones.

Heather's mum, Julie, of Kendal Rise Road, has welcomed the moves but says there is a lot to be done.

Julie said: "This is quite incredible and good news for the children who play on the beach.

"Dog faeces carries a number of infections including E-coli and on a beach particularly where youngsters are digging, it should not be left.

"You wouldn't let your child play in a sand-pit where there is dog mess.

"I hope this doesn't just transfer the problem, though, and we need to educate dog owners to always clear up after their pets everywhere."

When Heather died Julie set up a trust in her name to raise awareness about the virus.
