A 15-YEAR-OLD girl has been charged with knocking down gravestones in Bromsgrove Cemetery.

The teenager is accused of vandalising 14 of the headstones in the Bromsgrove District Council-run cemetery, in Church Street, on Monday.

The girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is due to appear before Redditch magistrates tomorrow.

Sgt Andy Chinn, of Bromsgrove police, said: "We are very disappointed that this kind of damage was caused again -- especially in the light of the publicity that surrounded the damage earlier in the year."

Two teenagers escaped prison sentences following a £50,000 wrecking spree at the nearby St John's churchyard in January.

They were given supervision orders and their parents were ordered to pay £1,650 compensation.

Sgt Chinn said police were not aware of any connection between the recent vandalism and the earlier attacks.

The council's head of administration services, Vince Harrison, said: "It's most regrettable but we understand the police have dealt with the matter.

"It is a very difficult site to monitor because it is large.

"We can't use CCTV because of the legitimate activities that go on in the cemetery.

"People who go to pay their respects quietly don't want to be filmed."

He said the graves which were damaged were very old, and it was unlikely there are any traceable relatives.
