THESE were the scenes of flooding in Bromsgrove following severe storms on Sunday night which brought railways to a halt, blocked roads and cut power to hundreds of homes.

Waist-high floods under the railway bridge in Hanbury Road, Stoke Prior, on Monday morning left one car floating in the water.

In Wythall, there were floods six feet deep at the ford in Houndsfield Road.

Fire engines from Bromsgrove and pumps from Bromsgrove District Council were used to clear floods.

There was commuter chaos when trains were cancelled on the Worcester to Birmingham line, which runs through Bromsgrove, as part of a blanket closure of services by Railtrack over concerns about floods and fallen trees.

A Central Trains spokeswoman yesterday said trains were running to a normal timetable.

Trees falling on overhead cables disrupted services on the Cross City Line, affecting passengers from Barnt Green and Alvechurch.

A Railtrack spokesman said services were restored later on Monday.

Motorists also suffered and were held up after a total of 50 trees in the Bromsgrove area fell in the gales.

Worcestershire Highways Partnership in Bromsgrove manager John Fraser said: "The problem is made worse at this time of year because drains are blocked by leaves."

He said all the roads were reopened by mid-afternoon on Monday.

Electricity supplies were cut from 357 homes in Stoke Prior when overhead cables came down in the storm.
