Is it the chop for Clive?

CLIVE Soley is a worried man. The chairman of the Parliamentary Labour Party is facing the chop after apparently backing Tony Blair's choice for Speaker.

The Prime Minister favoured Tory Sir George Young, who stood down as Shadow Leader of the House to enter the race to succeed Betty Boothroyd.

But Labour backbenchers threw their weight behind Glasgow MP Michael Martin - and many of them feel so should have Mr Soley.

A troubled Mr Soley approached Mike Foster after the vote and asked him whether he would be backing him to keep his job as PLP chairman.

''I had not really thought about it yet, Clive,'' responded the Worcester Labour MP.

This was hardly a voice of confidence from Worcester Man.
