BOB Green has emerged as a candidate for the vacant manager's post at Bromsgrove Rovers.

Green spent just two months in charge at the Victoria Ground back in the 1998-99 season before quitting.

But chief executive Pat Bannister has confirmed that he has applied for the post, as has ex-Paget Rangers boss Paul Madders.

However, Bannister says they will take their time in appointing a successor to George Rooney, who left the club last week. He said: "We are not going to rush anything - it needs to be right."

Rovers are also tracking former Worcester City and Torquay United striker Michael Griffiths, who has been released by Halesowen Town, and have put in a seven-day approach for Gresley Rovers striker Simon Tucker.

Griffiths' wages could be a problem for cash-strapped Rovers but Bannister remains confident.

He said: "We are looking for someone to play up front alongside Richard Burgess, and Eric McManus (Rovers' caretaker boss) has watched Michael for quite some time and knows him well."

Rovers entertain Stourport Swifts in the second leg of last season's delayed Worcester Royal Infirmary Senior Cup final tonight (7.45).

Swifts lead 3-2 from the first leg, and both sides are hoping to field unchanged squads.

Rovers' planned friendly against an Aston Villa XI on Thursday is likely to be called off as Villa have injury problems.

They are hoping to re-arrange the match later in the season.
