TABLE-topping Malvern Rugby Club became the first team to beat Old Laurentians in the Midlands West Two when they secured a fine 24-3 away victory.

In a match badly affected in gale force winds and driving rain, Malvern played into the storm in the first half and weathered the initial onsalught from OLs, only conceding a 12th minute penalty.

Malvern slowly began to dominate and on the stroke of half time their pressure paid off when Andy Longley slotted a penalty to make sure his side were level at the break.

Using the win advantage intelligently after the restart, Longley kicked Malvern into attacking positions deep in home territory.

The continuous pressure again reaped rewards when twice with five minutes Longley notched two more penalties.

The Malvern skipper then set up the opportunity for Dave Beech to win a kick-and-chase to the line to touch down.

Longley's 65th minute penalty put Malvern two clear scores ahead and with five minutes left they won a line-out deep in OLs territory which led to Steve Cooper bursting through to score in the corner.

Longley's kick from the touchline went over via a post to finish off a OLs side who had been unbeaten at home for a year.

Third in the table Bromsgrove triumphed 34-0 at home to Derby in Midlands West Two.

The result leaves them two points behind leading duo Malv-ern and Hinckley.

Stourport have two weeks until their top of the North Midlands One table clash with Bishops Castle and took the opportunity of a friendly fixture at Alcester to give a run out to emerging players Chris Way at scrum half and Matt Roberts at hooker. They won 25-0.

The conditions were atrocious and the driving rain and wind made all aspects of the game difficult but it was Stourport who coped best in the early phases and pressurised the home side deep in their half.

The first try came from loose head prop Carl Pope who drove over the line after the Stourport pack had worked the ball to the opposition line.

Shortly afterwards flanker Les Pimm scored a try after taking a quick penalty to catch their defence unaware.

The Stourport scrumage put Alcester's pack under pressure all game and took several balls against the head.

Using a scrum on the 22 metre line a No.8 break linked winger Toby Lee with flanker Andy Bourne to set up Chris Way for a try.

The score was 15-0 at half time.

Playing down hill in the second half Stourport increased the pressure in the scrums forcing the Alcester back row to spill a ball 10 metres from the line which Pimm picked up and took over for his seconf try.

Stourport's final try came at the end of the game when the backs ran a ball out of defence involving the whole of their line and finished by winger Lee Philip putting Toby Lee in for the poi-nts.
