ALMOST £10 million is being invested in 300 homes by Wyre Forest District Council.

The controversial transfer of council housing stock from the authority to a private/public partnership has paid dividends with millions pouring into council coffers.

The transfer led to five councillors quitting the Labour party two years ago and tenants passing a motion of no confidence in the authority.

However, council housing portfolio holder Ken Stokes, who was one of the gang of five to leave in protest, has his sights firmly set on the future.

He said: "Whilst it is likely new development in urban areas will be on brownfield sites we do not intend to forget the needs of our rural communities.

"The council has now let a contract for professional consultants to undertake a local housing needs survey.

"The results of this will be used to ensure that the type of property provided will meet local needs and will be located where it is needed."

The investment will be undertaken by the council in conjunction with Wyre Forest Community Housing and other partner housing associations.

The council received about £39 million for the housing stock. However, after clearing its debts and other payments it is left with £10 million which it will invest in providing 300 homes for the district.

Council leader Mike Oborski said: "The council's local plan is also under review and we will ensure that in future developers will provide a higher percentage of affordable housing units.

"The needs of the private sector are also being addressed and resources will be targeted into areas of existing poorer housing bringing back into use long-term vacant properties and assisting with energy conservation and home security measures."
