FARMERS caught up in the collapse of electricity supply company Independent Energy will be kept up-to-date on the best course of action to take.

The Farm Energy Centre based at the National Agricultural Centre in Stoneleigh, Warwickshire, is offering to pass information on to former customers in return for faxing, phoning or e-mailing their details.

Independent Energy called in the receivers on Friday, September 8.

"Independent Energy marketed very aggressively and it is estimated that up to 5,000 farm sites may be signed up with the company," said FEC manager Andrew Kneeshaw.

"We've been aware of Independent's billing problems for some time and have warned farmers to be careful.

"However, bargain basement electricity prices attracted many to the company."

Mr Kneeshaw warned farmers not to panic, pledging there would be no disconnections.

"Electricity regulator Ofgem will undoubtedly be issuing more information in the following weeks," he added.

"I suspect that sorting things out at customer level could be a long and messy business."

Farmers can log their details by calling 024 7669 6512, fax on 024 7669 6360 or e-mail advice@farmenergy. com
