Things seem a bit quiet this week, not many news items and only a few matches to tell you about.

Don't forget if you have any bits of angling news, catches, results, fixtures or whatever, please let me know on 457485 or by e-mail on johnbushel1@netscape.net - I'd be only too pleased to hear from you.

By the way, come on all you lady anglers out there Mal Hayes still has lots of spare pegs available for next Saturday's (16th September) Broadacres Ladies match, Mal has worked hard and managed to attract sponsorship in the form of tackle prizes from several of the local tackle companies. So come on girls don't be shy give Malcolm a ring on (01527) 836461 to reserve a peg, I'm sure you'll be missing out on a good day if you don't. The disabled match on Friday is already a sell-out and with venue fishing well some good catches are virtually guaranteed on both days.

Next Sunday Steve Savage is running another of his popular RMG open matches on the Stratford canal. Draw time for this one is at the usual 8-00am at the Horseshoe pub on the Alcester Rd. Kings Heath with fishing from 9-00 till 1-00pm. Ring Steve on 501363 to book in.

Now on to this week's matches starting with the Hymatic AC's annual day-out match which this year was on the Meadowlands fishery at Ryton-on-Dunsmore near Coventry, what a lovely place this is, it was my first time there and I can't wait to have another go.

As usual our young master Scott Poynton gave us another lesson, winning his fourth match of our season with an excellent catch of 27lb 3oz. Scott fished maggot over groundbait on the pole at varying lengths from 3 to 12 metres taking lots of small tench with roach and other fish. This win also made Scott our stillwater champ once again as he had won all three of our previous events on that type of water. Nigel Hill was second just a couple of decent fish behind with 25lb 14oz, another mixed bag this taken at 3 metres with maggot on the hook. I managed third from the next peg to Nigel with 25lb 6oz catching well in the last 40 minutes of the match after a slow start. Pete Grimshaw was fourth with 24lb 10oz of small fish ahead of Gary Fisher with 19lb 9oz just ahead of brother Dave with 17lb 13oz. In an impromptu pairs event, run in conjunction with the match I was lucky enough to be drawn with Scott Poynton and our combined 52lb 9 oz total gave us an easy win with Dave Fisher and Nigel Hill second with 43lb11oz.

Saturday's Redditch carnival shield match at Arrow Valley lake was a little disappointing although some fair weights of carp were taken by the leading competitors.

Colin Deaner (Leeda) made good use of a plum draw, opposite the stump at the end of the big island, where he fished the "method" for a catch of 6 carp and 2 bream weighing in at 45lb 4oz and a clear win. From a peg on the other side of the lake Martin Hemming (CX Match) also fished the method and included the fish of the match, a carp of 14lb 13oz, in his 30lb 10oz runner-up bag. Fred Reynolds (B'ham) was third again with carp for 14lb 14oz taken from a peg on the Bluebell bank. Co- match organiser, Redditch Fed chairman Dave Fisher was fourth with one carp for 5lb 2 oz from the peg next to the winner. My thanks go to Barbara Jones of the carnival committee for her work in organising this event.

The Arrow continued in it's present difficult mood for the Bell AC Studley club match on the Dark Lane stretch of the river at Oversley. Wily old campaigner Dave Rollason fished a small swimfeeder on peg 15 for a brace of decent barbel and two chub for a 7lb 7oz top catch. Experienced Tony Bourne had only one bite in the whole match but made it count when he landed a barbel of 5lb 14oz after a spirited fight for second spot. Tony legered casters on peg 9 to tempt the fish. Third placed man Andy Carr managed 4lb 5oz of chub from a downstream peg.

Over on the Avon at Pershore the going was also pretty tough for the Studley Rd. AC's latest club match. In pole position club stalwart George Baker had a bream of 4lb which with a few bits gave him a 4-7-9 total. George went for the bream, fishing the feeder over groundbait on peg 2 and it paid off. Next door on peg 3 Arnie Duggan had a rake of bits for 3lb 12oz and second place. Tied for third with 2lb 7oz were Monty Salisbury and Steve Doveydaitis. Monty had loads of gudgeon from peg 35 and Steve had perch and bits on 23 for their catches. Section winners were Pete Taylor with 1-14-6 and Kip Cairns with 1-12-12.

The only Sunday match I have heard about this week was the Pipco open on the Stratford Canal at Warstock where small roach dominated catches. Jerry Lundy (Johns FT) took a few better fish on caster from the 'stump' peg for a 3-2-12 winning total continuing his recent good form on the canal. In second spot Pete Lewis (Studley Rd) was some way behind with 1-12-14 just 2 drams ahead of Glyn Blewett (Redditch MG). Arnie Duggan (Studley Rd) was in the frame again in fourth place with 1-8-12 just ahead of the mysterious 'Ginger' (nobody seems to know his name) fifth with 1-6-2. I wonder when this canal is going to switch on again and produce the sport we know it's capable of.

Tight lines!
