THE Royal Shakespeare Company's 10th Fringe Festival began on Monday, with more than 40 actors, musicians, stage managers and directors from the Summer 2000 season taking part.

The two-week festival features about 20 events such as short plays, new writing, concerts, and one-man shows which will all be held at The Other Place, Stratford.

One of the highlights includes Samuel West, who plays Richard II, undertaking the mammoth task of directing Hamlet in just two weeks.

All events are timed to take place around RSC productions and on Sundays so theatregoers can enjoy late night comedy or an afternoon of new writing alongside actors' more usual roles.
