THE race is on at St Augustine's High School as governors try to secure £50,000 sponsorship as they apply to the Department for Education and Employment to become a technology college.
Technology colleges are specialist schools which attract additional Government funding to build on strengths and raise standards.
If the school raises the sponsorship from various sources, the DfEE will invest a one-off capital grant of £100,000, which St Augustine's would use to refurbish its science laboratories.
The school will have access to funding, taking the total investment to £500,000 in the first three years.
The school now has to draw up a detailed development plan showing how it will improve teaching and learning and raise standards in ICT, maths, science and technology.
