RACIAL equality in Redditch has again been given a huge financial boost to continue its good work though the town and throughout the county.

Worcestershire Racial Equality Council had to re-apply to the Lottery Charities Board after it changed from Worcester Racial Equality Council last September and started serving a wider area.

The charities board has now agreed to continue the grant, meaning the organisation will benefit to a tune of £360,700 for two separate areas.

It will include the funding of the Community Development Officer post which is filled by Zahoor Ahmad.

Council spokesman Andrew Lee said: "This is an extremely important position as involves giving advice and support to ethnic groups.

"Mr Ahmad is very active in Redditch. He talks to youth groups, minority projects and gives guidance on fund-raising.

"He also links minority organisations with the police and health authorities to promote excellent working relations."

The money will also be used to employ a Racial Harassment Officer. The council is now interviewing candidates for the position.

This officer will liaise closely with police, the housing department and Victim Support, particularly in Redditch and Worcester, to help cope with the increasing rate of racial harassment cases.

Mr Lee said: "Sadly there are too many incidents of racial harassment in the area, not just within the workplace but between neighbours and on the street."
