AFTER a 15-minute delay, the match began with Alcester putting the visitors under extreme pressure in the first quarter. Alcester opened their account when from some sterling work by the forwards the ball was passed along the three quarter line for full back Martin Sargeant to touch down midway out. Taff converted to give Alcester a seven point lead. Evesham then hit back with a disputed try.

Evesham continued to press the Alcester defence and on several occasions broke through, thanks to some inept tackling. The visitors were not gaining the upper hand but as Alcester were reeling from some sparkling rugby from the visitors with their scrum half and full back looking particularly dangerous, winger Ian Wilson intercepted deep in his own half to scamper home to score wide out. Evesham then scored on half-time to make the score 12-10.

In the second period Evesham continued as they finished the first half, pressing the Alcester defence. Eventually a grabber kick brought its just reward with the Evesham winger winning the race for the touch down.

Alcester, now trailing for the first time, showed their spirit by hitting back with the winning try five minutes from time. Alcester were awarded a penalty 10 metres out. Scrum half Handley took a quick tap, passed the ball to second row Tony Higgins, who powered over to score and Taff converted to give Alcester their first win of the season.

During the second period hooker Kiwi Leigh went off with a head injury and Steve Faulkner came on and immediately made an impact with his strong scrummaging.
