PHARMACIST Dennis Ogle never seems short of an opinion on civic matters.

So why isn't he a Worcester city councillor?

It appears the reason is that it would cramp the Irishman's style.

You can't be a free spirit if you are a councillor," complained Mr Ogle, who is content for the time being to be the chairman of St John's Residents and Traders Association.

It is not for nothing that some residents dub him the "Prime Minister of St John's".

Take, for instance, the time that an unknown vandal daubed rather defamatory and unpleasant comments about Mr Ogle and Sainsbury's on the outside of the Smoke Stack pub in St John's, earmarked for destruction under the firm's plans for a supermarket.

"I made it clear that if it didn't disappear I would be very angry indeed," said Mr Ogle. "Very soon after the comments were removed."

A man of action, clearly. Might there one day be room on a Government quango for Dennis Ogle?
