CONTROVERSIAL plans to develop Grove Farm at Worcester have been refused by Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott.

Mr Prescott has supported the findings of Inspector Neil Holt, established during a week-long public inquiry.

Reasons for rejecting the application included fears of the impact on the countryside, landscape, and agricultural land.

The negative effects on residential amenity, plus the ecological and archaeological significance, were also cited as reasons, as were as traffic fears.

Action

The proposals had been for an employment park with light industrial units on around 35 acres of land between Bromyard Road and Bransford Road.

Residents rallied against the plans and formed an action group.

Worcester City Council withdrew its support for the application after the leadership of the council switched from Labour to Conservative in May.

"This is excellent news," said St John's Councillor Margaret Layland. "The hard work of people signing petitions and lobbying councillors and MPs has paid off."
