INSPIRATION for Malvern's new water feature came from a supermarket, a hydropathic doctor and a 100-year-old resident.

After deliberating over the suggestions sent into the Malvern Gazette by local residents, the judging panel decided the water feature in front of Waitrose should be called Rose Gully.

Out of 16 suggestions, five people came up with names that included the word "Rose" and one suggested "The Gully", so the Malvern Spa Association, who set up the competition, decided to combine the two and award six prizes.

Other suggestions included "Jaws", "Hope Water" and "Malvaqua".

John Ford, chairman of the Spa Association, said the name is very appropriate.

"Lots of people chose the name 'Rose' because of the Waitrose connection but one lady wanted to name the spout after her Aunt Rose, who is due to turn 100-years-old on September 9," he said.

The six winners were Kevin Hunt, Ivy Jarvis, Mr and Mrs Garland, Liz Docker, Mrs Platt and Coral Copson.

They will be treated to a conducted tour of the wells and spouts around the Hills by two experts on Malvern's water history, Cora Weaver and Dr Bruce Osborne.

The tours will take place tomorrow (Saturday) and Sunday, with coaches will leave Belle Vue Island at 2.30pm each day.

This annual well dressing competition is also taking place this weekend, having attracted a record 17 entries.

Mr Ford said the interest shown in the activities of the Spa Association and the success of the well dressing competition may lead to a bigger, week-long water festival this time next year.
